Happy Saturday. Here are a few things we’ve been reading, eating and trying this week to make your weekend a little better.

EDITOR’S PICKS

What to watch this weekend

Skill we're practicing

How to spot a lie by the words people use. Forensic linguist Kirsty King of University College London says liars tend to slip in five ways:

  • Repetition: "Fighting. Fighting. Fighting."

  • A long windup before the one fact that matters.

  • Distance: "I found this" instead of naming the person.

  • No senses: nothing they saw, heard or smelled.

  • Hiding in the crowd: "I" quietly turns into "we."

Useful the next time a teenager explains a missed curfew.

Book we're reading this weekend

The Jaws Log by Carl Gottlieb. Gottlieb rewrote Jaws while the cameras rolled, and this is his diary of a shoot where almost everything went wrong. The script was reworked practically every night with Spielberg, the three leads and the film's editor. The mechanical shark (Bruce) kept breaking down, so it ended up on screen about a third as often as Spielberg's storyboards planned. Spielberg came home 159 days and nearly $8 million later.

Cozy recipe for Sunday night

Italian sausage tortellini soup. Brown a pound of mild Italian sausage with an onion, a little crushed fennel seed and Italian seasoning. Add carrots, celery and tomato paste, then seven cups of beef broth. Drop in 20 ounces of cheese tortellini, stir in a couple cups of cream and a few handfuls of spinach, and finish with Parmesan. It's one big pot, and the full recipe is in the caption. More than 145,000 people have liked it.

Weight-loss program on our radar

HumeCare+. [Partner*] Most GLP-1 programs track one number: your weight. HumeCare+, from Hume Health, adds at-home 3D body composition scans, so you can see whether you're losing fat or muscle. Every member is reviewed by an independently licensed clinician and gets a personalized plan, a 24/7 care team and guidance on what happens when you stop the medication. Glycine, B12 and B6 are built in, it's delivered to your door, and it's rated 4.7/5 across 21,479 reviews. See how the program works.

Chore we're doing before the clocks change

Test the smoke alarms. Clocks fall back next Sunday, Nov. 1, the classic reminder. Working smoke alarms cut the risk of dying in a home fire by 60%, according to the latest NFPA research, and about three in five home fire deaths happen in homes with no alarm or none that works.

  • Press the test button on every alarm. You want one in each bedroom and on every level.

  • Check the date on the back. Replace any alarm older than 10 years.

  • Swap the batteries if yours use replaceable ones.

Five minutes and a step stool.

NFL booth breakup we're following

Joe Buck and Troy Aikman are on the rocks. After 25 years calling games together, the Monday Night Football duo reportedly argued before an Oct. 12 game, and it was about money. Buck just signed a six-year ESPN extension worth about $108 million. Aikman, in the final year of his deal, reportedly hasn't gotten a formal offer. Fox reportedly pays Tom Brady $37.5 million a year to do the same job. Aikman says he'd be "one hundred percent" open to staying with Buck. Enjoy them while you can.

EXTRA INNINGS

"Clean" ketchup costs up to 5X more per ounce. The Kentucky priest who got Pope Francis to sign two bottles of bourbon. A Secret Service agent swaps "why" for three better words. Thieves used the winery's own forklifts to haul off 30,000 bottles of Italy's best wine. Hairmax's FDA-cleared laser devices help regrow fuller, thicker hair, and select devices are up to $300 off, gifts included*.

Tried something this week worth passing along? Hit reply. It might make next Saturday’s picks.
