TOP STORY TODAY

Tehran Names Successor

Iran's Assembly of Experts has elected Mojtaba Khamenei, son of the late Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, as the country's next Supreme Leader. The appointment follows Ali Khamenei's death in an Israeli strike last Saturday.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps reportedly pressured the assembly to quickly appoint a successor (potential strategy). Meanwhile, Israeli forces shot down an Iranian fighter jet over Tehran and conducted broad strikes on command centers, missile launchers, and security infrastructure across the country.

Israel had anticipated Mojtaba's appointment. Over 100 Iranian naval personnel remain missing after a warship sank off Sri Lanka, and Qatar Airways suspended flights through at least Friday (oil updates).

Texas Senate Shakeup

Texas state Rep. James Talarico defeated Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett Tuesday in the Democratic Senate primary, securing the nomination to challenge the eventual Republican candidate in November. No Democrat has won a Texas statewide race in over 30 years.

Republican Sen. John Cornyn and Attorney General Ken Paxton advanced to a May 26 runoff after neither reached the 50% threshold needed to win outright. Rep. Wesley Hunt finished third and conceded. All three candidates had campaigned on ties to President Trump, who declined to endorse.

Crockett's campaign announced plans to sue over reported voting irregularities in Dallas. A Trump endorsement in the Cornyn-Paxton runoff is widely expected to be decisive. Texas Senate primary results (live updates).

Mexico's Dry Canal

Mexico is nearing completion of the Interoceanic Corridor of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, a $7.5 billion rail-and-port megaproject connecting the Pacific and Gulf coasts across 300 kilometers of southern Mexico. Final construction is expected by June 2026.

The corridor is designed to move containers coast-to-coast in under six hours, with projected capacity of 1.4 million containers annually. Planners estimate it could divert up to 5% of typical Panama Canal traffic during drought-related slowdowns.

The project includes industrial parks, free-trade zones, and an estimated 3,200 jobs. The Panama Canal Authority acknowledged monitoring the project while expressing confidence in its own 180-route, 170-country network (see video).

Get a Dog, Live Longer

Research spanning decades links dog ownership to lower blood pressure, reduced cardiovascular risk, and a 24% lower chance of dying from all causes over ten years. Experts believe increased physical activity is a key factor.

However, studies show the benefit depends on actually walking the dog. Owners who share unhealthy habits with their pets may see little to no health advantage.
