TOP STORY TODAY

Iran Protest Deaths

Iranian Health Ministry officials told TIME that approximately 30,000 people may have died during protests on January 8-9, far exceeding the government's public count of 3,117. Witnesses report security forces used rooftop snipers and heavy machine guns after authorities shut down internet communications nationwide.

The protests began December 28 over economic concerns and expanded into calls for regime change (NYT). Hundreds of thousands participated across 4,000 locations before the violent crackdown. Independent activists have confirmed 5,459 deaths while investigating 17,031 additional cases.

Experts note the two-day death toll would represent one of history's largest mass casualty events from gunfire. Columbia University researchers suggest the actual figures may be higher, as the count excludes military hospital deaths and casualties from unreached areas.

Super Bowl LX

The Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots will face off in Super Bowl LX on February 8 at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, California. Seattle enters as 3.5-point favorites with the NFL's top-scoring defense, allowing just 17.2 points per game during the regular season.

The Seahawks finished 14-3 as the NFC's top seed behind quarterback Sam Darnold and coach Mike MacDonald's elite defense. The Patriots also went 14-3 under first-year coach Mike Vrabel, marking a dramatic turnaround from their 4-13 record last season. Second-year quarterback Drake Maye led the NFL in Total QBR at 77.1.

This marks a rematch of Super Bowl XLIX, famously decided by Malcolm Butler's goal-line interception in 2014. Both teams struggled with turnovers during the regular season, with Seattle committing 28 and New England's Maye fumbling six times across two playoff games. The game kicks off at 6:30 PM ET on NBC.

Honnold Climbs Taipei

Alex Honnold became the first person to free solo Taipei 101's 1,667-foot tower on January 24, setting a record for the largest urban free solo climb. The Netflix-streamed ascent took one hour, 31 minutes, and 34 seconds. The original broadcast was delayed one day due to weather conditions.

Honnold climbed without ropes while wearing a microphone, with cameras following his progress. He navigated ten 16-foot steel dragon sculptures protruding from the building's exterior. Millions watched the live stream as he scaled the Taiwanese skyscraper (video).

The "Free Solo" documentary star completed the climb before 7:45 PM Mountain Time. His wife Sanni McCandless and climber Emily Harrington provided commentary during the broadcast. Honnold celebrated at the summit, noting his arms were tired from the physically demanding upper sections.

TODAY’S LIFE ADVICE

Monk Says “Cleaning Beats Meditation”

A Zen monk explains that his teacher declared moving meditation, specifically cleaning, to be "a thousand times more powerful than sitting meditation."

The rigorous physical work serves as spiritual cleansing. Exhausting, body-aching tasks break down the "gunk" that's calcified around your inner being over years.

This physical exhaustion strips away unnecessary accumulation, allowing you to see clearly who you are.

The practice mirrors spiritual development:

  • Clean from the inside out first

  • Then move outward to relationships

  • Wear down prickly parts through repetition

Through demanding work done with full concentration, you remove what's impeding your self-understanding.

36-Hour Sardine-Only Fast

Dr. Dom D'Agostino eats only sardines for 3-5 days, achieving better results than traditional fasting.

  • 2-3 cans daily in 1-2 meals

  • Packed in extra virgin olive oil

  • With skin and bones intact

Each can delivers 15g protein, 15g fat, exceptional omega-3s. You hit ketosis without hunger because nutritional needs are met. Inflammation drops, energy surges, muscle preserves better than zero-calorie fasting.
