Meta Trial Begins
An $8 billion class action lawsuit against Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and company leaders began Wednesday in Delaware court. Investors allege Meta failed to disclose risks that Facebook users' personal data would be misused by Cambridge Analytica during the 2016 presidential campaign. The trial stems from privacy violations of a 2012 FTC consent order.
Shareholders claim Facebook sold user data to commercial partners and removed required privacy disclosures, violating federal agreements (More). The Cambridge Analytica scandal led to a $5.1 billion FTC penalty and $725 million user settlement. Privacy expert Neil Richards testified that "Facebook's privacy disclosures were misleading" during opening proceedings.
The trial will feature testimony from Zuckerberg and former COO Sheryl Sandberg through next week. Board members Marc Andreessen and Peter Thiel are also expected to testify. Shareholders want Meta executives to reimburse the company for legal costs exceeding $8 billion. See all lawsuits against Meta here.
Estée Lauder Digital
Estée Lauder hired Nestlé executive Aude Gandon as its first chief digital and marketing officer, CEO Stéphane de La Faverie announced. The beauty giant is launching a digital transformation to reverse declining sales and compete in an increasingly online marketplace. The company was previously slow to embrace digital retail.
Gandon will oversee both online commerce and store design as part of Estée Lauder's "Beauty Reimagined" turnaround plan. The former Nestlé global marketing chief led digital transformation across 188 markets and 2,000 brands. The company aims to restore sales growth over the next few years (more on Gandon here).
Estée Lauder plans to use artificial intelligence to enhance customer experience and identify trending products faster. The CEO said AI will help customers discover complementary products and create personalized shopping journeys. The strategy targets younger consumers who increasingly influence beauty trends. Mars Rock Auction
A 54-pound Martian meteorite sold at Sotheby's auction for $5.3 million, the auction house announced. The rock, discovered in Niger's Sahara desert in November 2023, measures 15 by 11 by 6 inches. It represents the largest piece of Mars currently on Earth.
The meteorite was blasted from Mars by an asteroid impact and traveled 140 million miles before crashing to Earth. Laboratory testing confirmed its Martian origin by comparing its chemical composition to samples from NASA's 1967 Viking mission. The rock comprises nearly 7 percent of all known Martian material on our planet.
Only 400 confirmed Martian meteorites exist among Earth's 77,000 recognized meteorites, making such specimens extremely rare. Scientists value these samples as the only known Mars material available for study until future missions return samples directly. Sotheby’s auction link here.

Comfort Destroys Willpower
Stanford neuroscientist Andrew Huberman just revealed something that changes everything we know about willpower.
There's a brain region called the anterior midcingulate cortex that literally grows bigger when you do things you hate. Not things that are hard. Not things that challenge you. Things you actively don't want to do.
Here's what blew Huberman's mind:
Obese people: Smaller anterior midcingulate cortex
Athletes: Larger anterior midcingulate cortex
The kicker: If you start enjoying the hard thing, the growth stops
David Goggins has been doing this for decades without knowing the science. Every morning he wakes up, hates what he's about to do, and does it anyway. Not because he's motivated. Because he understands something most people miss:
"There's no f*cking hack, bro. To grow that thing, do it, and do it, and do it. The hack is, it’s going to f*cking suck."
While everyone else chases motivation, Goggins builds his willpower one miserable day at a time. That's why he never feels like he's "missing something" while billionaires with everything still do.
The science is clear: Friction builds willpower. Comfort destroys it.
The 4% Withdrawal Rate May Drain Your Portfolio
New Morningstar analysis suggests the classic 4% retirement withdrawal rule may be too risky in today's market environment. The study found retirees now face a 57% chance of running out of money over 30 years, up from the historical 10% failure rate. High valuations and lower bond returns recommend a more conservative 3.3% withdrawal rate instead.
