GOP Bill Passes
House Republicans just passed a sweeping $4 trillion tax and spending package, extending Trump's 2017 tax cuts while implementing major reforms to Medicaid and food stamps. The 1,000-plus-page measure would eliminate taxes on tips (read the history) and overtime, expand the child tax credit, and raise the state and local tax deduction cap, but comes with significant trade-offs.
Bond markets have already reacted negatively, sending interest rates higher as traders anticipate increased Treasury issuance. The legislation cuts nearly $800 billion from Medicaid (how Medicaid works) through stringent work requirements and eligibility checks, with the Congressional Budget Office projecting 10 million people could lose coverage.
Additional provisions would shift SNAP costs to states and eliminate climate energy subsidies, potentially raising electricity bills by 10% according to industry analyses. Several GOP senators have signaled opposition over fiscal concerns, citing rising bond yields and warning of a fiscal crisis. Musk says the bill undermines DOGE.
Southwest Ends Free Bags
Southwest Airlines will begin charging $35 for the first checked bag and $45 for the second starting Wednesday, ending its signature "bags fly free" policy after years of industry pressure. The Dallas-based carrier disclosed the fees in an employee message this week, marking the elimination of one of its most distinctive customer perks.
Elite status holders and Southwest credit card customers will retain free baggage benefits, while companions on the same reservation can share those allowances. The move coincides with the launch of Southwest's new basic-economy tickets, which replace "Wanna Get Away" fares as the airline's cheapest option but eliminate change privileges and include seat assignments at the back of the plane.
CFO Tom Doxey said the airline was out of sync with competitors and needed to unbundle features to drive revenue from premium tickets. Southwest is overhauling its business model entirely (more changes here), ditching open seating and unique boarding in favor of assigned seats and extra-legroom options set to launch later this year. This move also threatens boarding times.
Harry Potter Cast
HBO unveiled the lead cast of its Harry Potter TV series, ending a months-long search for the main roles of Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasley. The young leads — Dominic McLaughlin, Arabella Stanton, and Alastair Stout — will begin filming this summer, with a debut scheduled for next year.
The adaptation will be a decade-plus project, with each season covering a single book in JK Rowling's seven-book series. Warner Bros. has described the adaptation as faithful to the novels, with longer character arcs than the 2001-11 film adaptations that launched Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint to fame. The new trio are largely newcomers, though Stanton starred as Matilda in the West End musical (video).
The leads join previously announced cast members including John Lithgow as Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as McGonagall, and Nick Frost as Hagrid (full cast list). J.K. Rowling will serve as Executive Producer, despite recent controversies.

Get Mentors to Respond
What’s the secret to getting mentors to actually help you? For years, Lewis Howes sent the same desperate LinkedIn message: "Hey, I'm broke, can you give me some advice?" Radio silence. Then he discovered why successful people were ignoring him – he was making it all about his problems.
The shift was subtle but powerful. Instead of begging for help, he became a student of their stories. He'd research someone's career, find that moment where they overcame a major obstacle, and reach out with genuine curiosity:
“It’s really interesting how you overcame [this challenge] in [your career] and [jumped to this position]. I would really love to hear about the mindset you had when you were facing that challenge and what got you there.”
Suddenly, the same executives who ignored him were buying him lunch to tell their stories. Why? He wasn't asking for advice anymore. He was giving them permission to relive their victories. People lit up sharing their triumphs. The advice flowed naturally. Stop leading with your needs. Start leading with their wins. Your network can transform overnight. Lewis Howes now hosts The School of Greatness Podcast.
