TOP STORY TODAY

Ransom Deadline Passes

The $6 million ransom deadline for Savannah Guthrie's missing mother passed Monday with no public updates on Nancy Guthrie's status or whether payment was made. Pima County Sheriff's Department said investigators have identified no suspects, persons of interest, or vehicles connected to the case.

Savannah Guthrie released a video Monday calling the situation an "hour of desperation" and pleading for public help. Over the weekend, she and her siblings told purported kidnappers they "will pay" but requested proof Nancy is alive before proceeding. Search timeline here.

The FBI said any ransom decision ultimately rests with the Guthrie family, though law enforcement provides recommendations. Multiple ransom demands requesting cryptocurrency have been sent to the family and media outlets since Nancy's January 31 disappearance. Authorities promised updates if significant developments occur.

Zuck’s Miami Estate

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and wife Priscilla Chan are purchasing a newly completed waterfront mansion on Miami's Indian Creek island from Jersey Mike's founder Peter Cancro. Local real-estate agents estimate the nearly 2-acre property will sell for $150 million to $200 million. The estate features wraparound terraces, elaborate water features, and a waterfront pool (photos).

Indian Creek has attracted billionaires including Jeff Bezos, Carl Icahn, and Tom Brady. The exclusive gated island has another home listed for $200 million. Zuckerberg's neighbor Irma Braman said he plans to move in by April.

California's proposed 5% billionaire tax (retroactive to January 1, 2026) is driving tech wealth to Florida, which has no state income tax. Miami real-estate agents report non-stop activity from California buyers. Google co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin have also purchased or are negotiating Miami properties worth over $238 million combined. Billionaires in Florida.

Olympic Medals Breaking

Multiple athletes at the 2026 Milan Cortina Winter Olympics reported their medals breaking within hours of receiving them. U.S. skier Breezy Johnson's gold medal broke while jumping in celebration Sunday. German biathlete Justus Strelow's bronze medal fell off its ribbon during post-ceremony dancing, and U.S. figure skater Alysa Liu's gold detached from its ribbon.

Olympic organizers are investigating the medal quality issues with "maximum attention," according to chief games operations officer Andrea Francisi. The medals are designed to represent "two halves coming together" but appear to have faulty clasps connecting them to ribbons. Johnson advised fellow winners: "Don't jump in them."

This marks the second consecutive Olympics with medal quality problems. At the 2024 Paris Summer Games, medals required replacement after athletes reported tarnishing and corrosion that created a mottled appearance. Organizers are working on solutions to repair or replace the damaged medals (see video).
