TOP STORY TODAY

AI Cracks Erdős

An internal version of OpenAI's next model, Astra, produced new results on ten open problems in mathematics and theoretical computer science. Most had seen no progress on their central questions for at least a decade.

The compute cost to find all ten solutions was roughly $2,000 at current API rates. Each result ships with a Lean certificate, a machine-checkable proof file anyone can verify on a laptop without trusting the company.

The work spans sphere packing, group theory, quantum complexity, and post-quantum cryptography. Three resolve problems from the Erdős catalog. Specialists still have to confirm the results are correct, new, and as significant as claimed.

Billionaire Tax Advances

California's Democratic Party endorsed Proposition 40 on Sunday, clearing the 60 percent threshold at a San Diego meeting of its roughly 380-member executive board. Voters decide the measure on November 3.

The initiative would levy a one-time 5 percent tax on the net worth of Californians worth $1 billion or more, roughly 200 people. Backers project $100 billion, directed mostly toward healthcare. Real estate and retirement accounts are excluded.

Residency is fixed as of January 1, 2026, with net worth measured December 31. The endorsement passed over opposition from Governor Gavin Newsom, the California Teachers Association, and California Professional Firefighters.

Spider-Man’s Historic Weekend

Spider-Man: Brand New Day opened to $355 million domestically this weekend, landing roughly $2 million shy of the all-time record set by Avengers: Endgame in 2019. Friday alone delivered $168 million, a new single-day best.

Worldwide, the film pulled $927 million from 66 markets, the second-biggest global launch ever recorded. Sony cleared its own studio high, the $260 million debut posted by Spider-Man: No Way Home in 2021.

Every film combined grossed roughly $430 million, the largest domestic weekend in history. The 2026 box office now runs 15.2 percent ahead of last year, with 24.1 million tickets sold in three days. Amazon also celebrated the launch with Spidey merch.

The 20 grams most protein bars bury on the back

Flip over the average "high protein" bar and you'll find 20 grams of sugar, or a sugar alcohol that turns your stomach into a science experiment by 10am. ALOHA buries nothing. Five grams of sugar, 14 grams of plant protein, 10 grams of fiber, no stevia, no erythritol.

The protein comes from organic pumpkin seed and brown rice, which is why you get steady energy instead of the crash that walks you back to the pantry at 3pm.

Peanut Butter Cup is the flavor people reorder. Over 20,000 boxes sold last month, 4.4 stars across 2,558 ratings, and it runs about two bucks a bar.
