Richest Man, Life Sentence

A Shenzhen court sentenced Evergrande founder Hui Ka Yan to life in prison yesterday for financial fraud. The 67-year-old was once Asia's richest man, with a reported net worth of $42 billion.

He appeared in the dock flanked by two officers, his first public sighting since 2023. The company inflated revenues by roughly $80 billion across two years and defaulted on more than $300 billion.

Two of his sons and more than 50 executives received terms from 22 months to 18 years. Liquidators have recovered $255 million so far. Chinese home prices are down 20% since 2021. What it did to housing.

Check Your Freezer

The FDA raised a Publix berry recall to its highest risk level this week, meaning the agency believes eating the product could cause serious illness or death. Twelve people have been infected, four hospitalized.

Publix pulled all lots of GreenWise organic frozen blueberries and mixed berries in late July. The best-by dates run into 2028, so the bags are still sitting in home freezers across eight states.

Four UPCs are affected: 41415-06453, 41415-12053, 41415-06753, and 41415-12153. Publix is issuing full refunds on returns. The strain can cause kidney failure in young children, older adults, and immunocompromised people.

The move: check the UPC on any GreenWise berries in your freezer, then return them for a refund. | The FDA's product photos and codes

The Road Exploded

A highway through Greenville, Texas, buckled in late July after a week of 99 to 102 degree heat, forming a two-foot ramp at a pavement joint. A pickup hit it and went airborne.

Engineers call it a blowup. Concrete slabs expand past their joints until they shove each other upward. Three weeks earlier, ten miles away, the same highway softened enough that cars pulled up chunks of it.

July was the hottest month ever recorded in the contiguous United States. Blowups closed interstates in Maryland and Louisiana this summer. San Antonio, Phoenix, and Los Angeles are testing white pavement to reflect heat. The moment it launched the truck.

Half of infertility cases involve him. Nobody tells you that.

Walk down the prenatal aisle and every box on the shelf is built for her. That is not because sperm health does not matter. It is because the industry never got around to it. Sperm health drives or contributes to roughly half of all infertility cases.

Bird&Be built for both from day one. In a prospective clinical study, men with male-factor infertility took the Male Fertility Power + CoQ10 Pack for 90 days and saw a statistically significant 52.2% increase in progressive sperm motility. That is 600 mg of CoQ10, the dose research links to the strongest results.

Her pack is built the same way, for the months before conception rather than after.

Make good money but still broke?

David Bach's line: the biggest money myth is that a raise fixes it. He went $50K to $75K to $100K to $150K and built nothing, because he never automated anything.

His fix, in order:

  1. Open your phone's subscription settings. Most people find 20+ charges running $400 to $500 a month.

  2. Cancel what you don't use. That's the funding.

  3. Automate 12.5% of gross before it hits your checking account. One hour of your workday.

  4. Send it to a target date fund, then stop looking.

  5. First goal is $10,000, not a million.

His math: $27.40 a day is $10,000 a year. Invested with dividends reinvested, Bach projects that at over $4.4 million in 40 years. Everyone is already on your payroll automatically. Netflix, the IRS, every bill. Get on it yourself. Full podcast.

Relationship audit worth running

Nobody sat down and decided you'd be the one who books the flights. It just happened, and then it happened for eleven years, and now you're quietly furious about a job you never took.

Therapist Nedra Glover Tawwab calls these silent agreements. You do the laundry, you plan the trips, you're the one everyone calls first. None of it was ever discussed, which means none of it can be renegotiated, which is exactly why it turns into resentment.

Her fix is unglamorous. Name one role that's wearing on you and say so out loud. Not as a complaint. As a renegotiation: this worked for years, circumstances changed, let's redo it. The discomfort of that conversation is smaller than the fight you're saving up for.
