Good morning. While Trump targets Comey and Hegseth summons generals, scientists still can't study substances millions use daily — here's why.

Former FBI Chief Indicted

Former FBI Director James Comey was indicted Thursday on charges of lying to Congress and obstruction. The criminal case was filed days after President Trump urged Attorney General Pam Bondi to prosecute his longtime political foe.

The two-count indictment alleges Comey made false statements during 2020 Senate testimony about the Russia investigation and obstructed congressional proceedings. Trump hailed the charges as "JUSTICE FOR AMERICA!" while Comey maintained his innocence in a video response.

The prosecution makes Comey the first senior official from the Trump-Russia investigation to face criminal charges. The case raises concerns about Justice Department independence as the White House exerts unprecedented influence over prosecutorial decisions.

MILITARY

Hegseth’s Secret Summit

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth ordered hundreds of generals and admirals to gather Tuesday at Quantico Marine Base, Pentagon officials confirmed. The unusual directive was issued without explanation, sowing confusion among commanders worldwide.

The order applies to approximately 800 generals and admirals with brigadier general rank or above in command positions. None of military officials contacted could recall a defense secretary ever assembling so many commanders simultaneously (Who is Pete Hegseth?)

The meeting comes amid Hegseth's controversial moves including firing senior leaders and ordering a 20 percent reduction in general officer positions. Officials expressed security concerns about gathering so many commanders in one location.

AMERICANS

PTO Sleep Survey

Thirty-seven percent of Americans used vacation days to rest rather than travel, according to a new Amerisleep survey released Thursday. The study of 1,200 Americans found workers prioritizing sleep over leisure during time off.

Millennials led the trend (43 percent), followed by Generation X (34 percent), Generation Z (33 percent) and Baby Boomers (20 percent). Higher earners were 26 percent more likely to use time off for sleep, averaging two to three days.

Sleep experts attribute the trend to widespread burnout, with workers using vacation time for "basic recovery instead of new experiences," Amerisleep coach Rosie Osmun said. Analysts predict staycations may grow more popular.

Which is Healthier? Alcohol vs THC

Despite decades of prohibition messaging, emerging research suggests cannabis may have different risk profiles than alcohol, though both carry significant health concerns.

Cannabis Trade-offs:

  • Pros: No lethal overdose dose; 97% reduced opioid use in medical patients; potential PTSD benefits

  • Cons: Psychosis risk, especially with early/frequent use; lung damage from vaping; addiction potential

Alcohol Comparison:

  • Pros: Light use may reduce cortisol; established research on safe consumption limits

  • Cons: Group 1 carcinogen; no safe consumption level per WHO; highly addictive

"From a safety perspective, cannabis wins by leaps and bounds," says Dr. David Rabin, board-certified psychiatrist and neuroscientist. But, federal restrictions create a research gap that prevents evidence-based policy decisions on substances millions use daily.

Are You a Clear Thinker?

Naval Ravikant told Joe Rogan: “If all of your beliefs line up into one political party, you’re not a clear thinker. If all your beliefs are the same as your neighbors and friends, you’re not a clear thinker. Your beliefs are socialized. They’re taken from other people. So if you want to be a clear thinker, you cannot pay attention to politics. It will destroy your ability to think.”
