Election Eve

Voters head to the polls Tuesday after the most expensive midterm campaign on record: about $11.2 billion in ads spent or reserved, just past the 2024 presidential cycle and about $2.3 billion more than the 2022 midterms.

Republicans lead ad spending, about $5.2 billion to Democrats’ $4.8 billion, and Texas’ Senate race alone topped $560 million. Early voting also set a midterm record, passing 46 million ballots by Friday.

Hours and ID rules vary by state, so check yours before heading out: find your polling place and hours. Curious who’s paying for all those ads? See the 50 biggest donors this cycle (see chart).

New ACA Checks

Open enrollment for 2027 ACA health plans started Sunday, with new identity checks for anyone using an agent on the federal marketplace, which serves 29 states. Most states’ window runs through January 15.

Shoppers now get a one-time code by text, email or automated call to approve their agent. First-time buyers, movers, anyone switching agents and anyone paying $30 a month or less must verify ID first, often through Experian.

One broker expects up to 1 in 5 shoppers to face extra checks, so starting early helps. Enroll by December 15 for coverage that starts January 1. Here’s what to check before you pick a plan.

Back From Mars

Four volunteers stepped out of NASA’s mock Mars on Saturday after 378 days sealed inside a 1,700-square-foot, 3D-printed habitat at Johnson Space Center in Houston. It was NASA’s second yearlong Mars rehearsal.

Since Oct. 19, 2025, the crew grew crops in simulated Martian soil, suited up for “Marswalks” and waited out message delays built to mimic a real trip. See inside the habitat (photos).

Next come two weeks of debriefs with NASA scientists. Commander Ross Elder called putting humans on Mars “not only achievable, but rather inevitable.” NASA is aiming for a crewed Mars mission as early as the 2030s.

Bake the Candy Bowl Into One Batch of Cookies

The leftover candy bowl will call your name all week. A better plan: chop it up, bake it into one batch of cookies tonight and take most of them to work.

  • The recipe: Two Peas & Their Pod's Halloween candy cookies use 2 cups of chopped candy bars and make 32 cookies in 25 minutes.

  • What works: Twix, Reese's, Snickers, Kit Kat, Butterfinger and Milky Way.

  • What doesn't: anything gummy, sour or chewy. Skittles and Starburst stay out.

  • The finish: press a few extra pieces on top, then add a pinch of flaky sea salt.

One batch, and the bowl is empty. Then reset.
