Good morning. When the Justice Department demands a company spin off major divisions, judges typically comply with sweeping remedies. Google's $2.5T empire just dodged that bullet.

Google Avoids Breakup

Federal Judge Amit Mehta rejected the Justice Department's request to break up Google on Tuesday, avoiding a $2.5 trillion company split. Instead, he imposed narrower restrictions on the tech giant's search and advertising monopoly practices.

Google must now share search data with competitors and cannot make its products default tools on mobile devices. The decision stemmed from findings that Google illegally controlled 90% of internet search through exclusive partnerships with Apple and others (Is Google a monopoly?).

The ruling offers hope for other tech companies facing potential breakups, including Meta, Amazon and Apple. Google plans to appeal the decision, which could reach the Supreme Court. A separate case targeting Google's ad tech business remains pending.

Trump Orders Strike

President Trump said Tuesday that U.S. military forces conducted a "kinetic strike" killing 11 "terrorists" on a drug vessel in the Caribbean. The boat carried members of Tren de Aragua, a Venezuelan gang designated as a foreign terrorist organization.

The strike targeted the vessel in international waters as it transported narcotics toward the United States after departing Venezuela. No U.S. forces were injured in the operation, which Trump shared in a 29-second video.

The administration has deployed seven ships, a submarine and 4,500 Marines near Venezuela as part of anti-drug trafficking operations. Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro called the U.S. military presence a "criminal and bloody threat" to his country.

America’s Billionaires

America now has 1,135 billionaires worth $5.7 trillion collectively, up from 927 in 2020, according to Altrata wealth intelligence firm. California leads with 255, while Elon Musk tops the list at $423 billion.

Most billionaires didn't make wealth in tech, with about 300 coming from banking and finance versus 110 from technology. One-third inherited their wealth, including 50 heirs from five major families controlling $830 billion, or 15% of total billionaire wealth.

Billionaires have donated $185 billion since 2015, primarily to education and medical research. However, about 25% have given less than $1 million over the past decade, with wealth concentrated among top 100 controlling $3.86 trillion.
