Pacific Goes Uncovered
The USS George Washington left port in Da Nang, Vietnam, last week and has since transited the Strait of Malacca toward the Indian Ocean, leaving the western Pacific without a deployed American aircraft carrier.
The carrier is expected to relieve the USS Abraham Lincoln, which has spent more than 260 days at sea without a port stop, a Navy record. The Lincoln's May return was extended to support operations against Iran.
The Navy has 11 carriers and typically deploys two or three at once. A fourth could follow if the USS Theodore Roosevelt sails from San Diego. Only two shipyards in the country can service them.
Hayden Panettiere, Dies at 36
Actress Hayden Panettiere died Sunday at 36. Greenville, South Carolina, police said officers and paramedics responded to a report of an unresponsive woman at an apartment complex around 1:50 pm and pronounced her dead at the scene.
An acquaintance placed the 911 call. Police said the preliminary investigation found no signs of foul play or suspicious circumstances. The cause and manner of death are pending with the Greenville County Coroner's Office.
She began working at 11 months old, voiced Dot in A Bug's Life, and starred in Heroes, Nashville, Remember the Titans, and two Scream films. Her memoir published in May. She is survived by her daughter, Kaya.
Swimming Records Smashed
American Kate Douglass broke the women's 50-meter freestyle world record twice Saturday at the Pan Pacific Championships in Irvine, California, closing with a 23.19-second final that cut 0.3 seconds off her morning swim.
Her preliminary swim of 23.49 had already beaten the old mark by 0.06. That record belonged to teammate Gretchen Walsh, who trains alongside Douglass at Virginia and took silver in the final at 23.74.
The 24-year-old finished the meet with six medals, including a 200 breaststroke silver she swam roughly 25 minutes after the record. Three more world records fell at the European Aquatics Championships this week (video here).
