Meta on Trial
Four states took Meta to trial in federal court in Oakland, accusing the company of designing Facebook and Instagram to addict children and collecting data on users under 13 without parental consent.
California, Colorado, Kentucky and New Jersey are seeking damages Meta disclosed could total $1.4 trillion, nearly its entire market value. Meta posted a rare profit decline last month, citing $2.4 billion in legal costs. Another 25 states go later.
Meta says teen accounts are private by default, but the company has found fewer than one in ten teens on Instagram have parental supervision enabled. Parents turn it on through Meta's Family Center dashboard. Advice for parents about teen accounts.
$40M Electric Ferrari
The first production Ferrari Luce sold for $40 million at a Monterey Car Week charity auction Saturday, roughly 36 times its $1.1 million estimate and a record for a new car at auction.
Ferrari stock fell nearly 8% when the electric four-door debuted in Rome in May, and a former chairman said the badge did not belong on it. Buyers claimed the entire opening allocation, just under 500 cars, within two months. More auction results here.
The Luce lists at 550,000 euros, about $640,000, meaning the chassis brought roughly 62 times retail. Ferrari raised full-year guidance last month on stronger personalization demand, and Milan shares are up about 12% this year. Photos and video here.
Underwater Volcano Power
A Seattle startup will drop a 100-kilowatt geothermal generator onto an undersea volcano off the Oregon coast on September 7, tapping hydrothermal fluids that reach 750 degrees Fahrenheit. The unit is named Adélie, after a penguin.
Endurance Energy, founded in January 2025 by a former SpaceX engineer, has completed four seafloor deployments, reaching two miles deep and 726 degrees. The company has raised $63 million and employs about three dozen people (Photos).
A megawatt-scale device follows, powering a first commercial pilot with the Kingdom of Tonga, with shipping targeted for next year. Corrosion, mineral scaling, and expensive subsea cables remain the main obstacles to commercial power.

How to earn 13x the guy next to you (with the same paycheck)
Two consultants, identical income…here’s how it works:
Consultant one files like everyone else and keeps 56% of what he earns
Consultant two runs the same income through a properly structured offshore holding company and keeps roughly 85%
Invest that gap at 8% for twenty years and it grows into a pile worth 13x his annual salary, wealth the guy in the next cubicle never builds at all
Same job. Same hours. The difference is structure, and it's legal, reported to the IRS, and available at smaller scale than you'd think.
The bedtime question that builds self-validating kids
Ask your kids at bedtime: "What made you proud today?"
The research behind why it works:
Pride is learnable. Kids who reflect on what they did well build self-evaluation skills instead of waiting for yours. Process-focused reflection preserves persistence; generic praise ("you're so smart") actually reduces it
The timing matters. Consistent bedtime routines are measurably linked to better emotion regulation
The shift is the point. "I'm proud of you" trains them to seek your verdict. "What are you proud of?" trains them to render their own
Try it for a week. Sleep research here.

TOGETHER WITH ARBOR
Half of your electric bill is negotiable
Your bill splits into delivery charges, which your utility sets in stone, and supply charges, which in many states you're allowed to shop. Most people never do, so they sit on a default rate for years, paying more than they need to for the exact same electricity.
Arbor, an independent licensed broker, secures a better supply rate for you from vetted suppliers, then keeps monitoring it so you're never quietly rolled back onto a pricier plan. And the cost to you is zero, always, because Arbor is paid by its supplier partners, never by customers.
Arbor is currently available in ME, NH, OH, IL, PA, MA, NJ, RI, DC, and NY.
