Tesla Approves $1T

Tesla shareholders Thursday approved a compensation plan potentially worth nearly $1 trillion for CEO Elon Musk (NYT) if he meets ambitious performance goals over the next decade. Tesla's stock fell modestly in after-hours trading following the vote.

The package requires expanding Tesla's market value from $1.4 trillion to $8.5 trillion while achieving targets like selling one million humanoid robots and ten million self-driving software subscriptions. Musk currently owns 15 percent of Tesla (portfolio here).

Major pension funds split on the decision. New York and California opposed it as excessive wealth concentration, while Florida supported it. A Delaware judge previously struck down Musk's 2018 pay package worth $128 billion.

Nancy Pelosi Retires

Nancy Pelosi announced Thursday she won't seek reelection to the U.S. House after nearly 40 years representing San Francisco. The 85-year-old first woman House speaker will finish her final term in office.

Pelosi served as speaker from 2007-2011 and 2019-2023, overseeing passage of the Affordable Care Act and leading both Trump impeachment proceedings. She raised over $1 billion for Democrats and helped orchestrate Biden's 2024 withdrawal.

Her departure opens a succession battle in California, where she faced potential primary challenges. Pelosi urged San Francisco to "know your power" and remain engaged in democracy ahead of 2026 midterms.

The Big Short, Again

Michael Burry's hedge fund bought $1.1 billion in put options against Nvidia and Palantir in the third quarter, betting their prices will fall. He allocated $912 million against Palantir and $186.6 million against Nvidia.

Burry gained fame shorting the market before the 2007-09 mortgage crisis, depicted in "The Big Short." His Scion Asset Management fund typically holds few positions and changes them frequently, currently reporting only four stock holdings.

Palantir trades at a P/E ratio of 417 and price-to-sales of 116, while Nvidia's are 53 and 28. Both stocks declined following disclosure of Burry's positions.

Do Sweeteners Cause Dementia?

Dr. Robert Lustig says diet sweeteners like aspartame and sucralose cause dementia through reactive oxygen species generation. Recent research in Annals of Neurology confirms the correlation. Lustig's new Alzheimer's theory centers on ATP energy crisis in brain cells. Reduced energy causes protein plaques and inflammation, leading to neuronal death. He says 95% of Alzheimer's is environmental, not genetic, with ultraprocessed food as a major factor.
