AI Chats in Court
Private conversations with AI chatbots have surfaced in at least 12 American court cases over the past two years, a review of public records published yesterday found. Both criminal prosecutions and civil lawsuits pulled the logs in.
A Missouri student typed a question to ChatGPT at 3:47 a.m. asking whether anyone could tell he had damaged 17 cars in a campus lot. He later consented to a phone search, was arrested, and pleaded guilty.
Chatbot logs carry no legal privilege (Sam Altman explains). Police generally need a warrant to search a phone, and one Fourth Amendment attorney says most people consent to the search anyway, handing over everything on the device.
The move: police need a warrant for your phone. Consent hands it over voluntarily. How to refuse a phone search

Weather Channel Betting
Kalshi and the Weather Co. announced a partnership yesterday. The Weather Co. will verify outcomes on Kalshi's weather markets, and the Weather Channel app and Weather .com will start showing Kalshi's live probability data.
Weather trading hit $564 million through July and is up 500% year over year. Since August 14, some New York temperature markets settle on Weather Co. data instead of National Weather Service readings.
The companies are exploring markets on local ski conditions and marathon race days. The Weather Co. discloses that it can earn a fee when readers open a Kalshi account through its links. The fee disclosure behind the deal.
Sandlot Reunion
Ten cast members from 1993's "The Sandlot" reunited for "Dugout Dads," a nine-episode comedy that dropped on YouTube Wednesday. Patrick Renna and Kyle Howard's Hambino Media created it, more than thirty years after the original.
Renna plays an idealistic dad who volunteers to coach Little League and discovers the parents and coaches behave worse than the kids. He based it on meeting other fathers at his own children's games. Danielle Fishel (Topanga) plays his wife.
NBA all-star Chris Paul and his brother CJ signed on as executive producers the same day, through Ohh Dip!!! Entertainment. Paul pitched himself over FaceTime with one line: it looks like you guys need a ninth. Watch the trailer.

Why Starting Feels Heavier Than It Is
Oxford neurologist Masud Husain studies people who lose motivation entirely. His finding: when apathetic people weigh whether an effort is worth it, their brains work harder than everyone else's to reach the same answer.
The weight is in the deciding, not the task. That is why the thing you have avoided for a week takes eleven minutes once you start.
So his tools all attack the decision.
Plan the week in advance so you are not choosing in the moment.
Break the thing into one piece small enough to start.
Use if-then rules, where finishing one part triggers the next.
And change the reward to something that actually matters to you.
His example: "hang the pictures" is a chore. "Show my kid how to hang pictures" is not.
He also draws a line. A motivation collapse that arrives suddenly is a medical question, not a discipline one. The move: tonight, write down tomorrow's first task.
Also in the episode: the patient whose motivation came back on a single drug (2:24), why the happiest people in a long-running Harvard study had the most ordinary lives (50:58), and whether doomscrolling is actually a dopamine problem (1:11:58).
Free Doc: The Fantastic Mr. Feynman
He helped build the atomic bomb, won a Nobel Prize, and figured out what brought down the Challenger by dropping an O-ring seal in a glass of ice water on live television. The BBC documentary is free on Daily Motion and runs an hour. It is built mostly from Feynman's own footage plus the people who knew him, and the thing that comes through is not the physics. It is that he refused to be impressed by anything he did not understand yet, including his own reputation.
