Good morning. Thomas Edison rejected brilliant scientists over soup. Today's bosses do the same with coffee cups. Most candidates never realize what happened.

TOP STORY TODAY
Senate Vote Today
Senate Majority Leader John Thune set up a vote today at 5:30 p.m. to reopen the government. Democrats will only vote for or against the House-passed continuing resolution, which failed seven previous times. Military personnel are due paychecks Wednesday.
This marks the eighth Senate vote on the House measure. Democrats won't have the chance to vote on their alternative proposal, which would extend health insurance subsidies and restore Medicaid cuts. The Senate convenes at 3 p.m. today.
President Trump directed Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to ensure troops receive pay this week. A Republican aide said Democrats face "only one choice" between the resolution or shutdown. It’s been two weeks of shutdown so far.
FRAUD
$15B Bitcoin Scam
The Department of Justice seized $15 billion in bitcoin from Chen Zhi, who allegedly ran a "pig butchering" fraud operation in Cambodia. The seizure is the largest forfeiture in DOJ history. An indictment was unsealed in Brooklyn federal court.
Zhi, 38, founded Prince Holding Group, which operates 10 scam compounds in Cambodia. Trafficked workers operated scams duping victims into transferring cryptocurrency with false investment promises. Zhi remains at large and faces 40 years in prison.
Treasury designated Prince Group as a transnational criminal organization and sanctioned over 100 individuals. The scheme caused billions in losses worldwide, prosecutors said. See cryptocurrency fraud here.

Shop Walmart in ChatGPT
Walmart announced Tuesday it will partner with OpenAI to sell products within ChatGPT. U.S. users can purchase nearly all website items (except fresh food) within months. Walmart+ members keep benefits like free shipping. The retailer's stock rose nearly 5% following news.
The partnership signals a shift in online shopping, CEO Doug McMillon said. ChatGPT's Instant Checkout currently supports single-item purchases and includes some Etsy and Shopify merchants.
Walmart is sharing purchase data with OpenAI—insights retailers typically guard. The companies also partner on AI training programs. "AI is going to change literally every job," McMillon said. See how ChatGPT works in retail.

Secret Interview Tests Reject Top Candidates
Your perfect resume won't save you if you fail tests hiring managers never mention.
Thomas Edison started it: rejecting scientists who salted soup before tasting. The logic? Assumptions over evidence.
Today's version? Trent Innes, former Xero MD, watches if you return your coffee cup to the kitchen. Fail this simple act, and your credentials don't matter.
Lewis Maleh, with 20 years recruiting experience, confirms: "These little behavioral observations tell you so much you'd never catch in formal Q&A."
The brutal truth: Skills get interviews. Micro-behaviors—how you treat objects, spaces, people—win jobs. Most candidates never see it coming.
How Nicotine Helps Long Covid
Early pandemic data revealed fewer smokers hospitalized with COVID-19 than expected, puzzling researchers. Scientists discovered the SARS-CoV-2 virus may interact with nicotinic acetylcholine receptors, potentially disrupting the body's cholinergic system. This led researchers to investigate medicinal nicotine's therapeutic potential for cognitive improvement, disease prevention, and inflammatory conditions—separate from tobacco's harmful effects.
