Stocks Rise
Global shares edged up Tuesday after the Senate passed legislation Monday ending the 41-day government shutdown. The S&P 500 rose 1.54% Monday, its largest one-day gain since mid-October, while the Nasdaq posted its biggest daily jump since May.
The House plans to vote Wednesday on the funding deal. London's FTSE 100 hit record highs. Economists estimate the shutdown likely reduced fourth-quarter GDP by 0.4 to 1 percentage points, though activity typically rebounds the following quarter.
Markets await economic data once government reopens. Gold traded above $4,100 per ounce. The pound weakened following British employment data that strengthened expectations for Bank of England rate cuts (some investors spending more).
Medicaid Drug Pricing
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services announced the GENEROUS program Monday to reduce Medicaid prescription drug costs. The initiative uses "most-favored-nation" pricing, aligning American prices with those paid in other countries.
Medicaid drug spending exceeded $100 billion in 2024, rising $10 billion in two years. Launching in 2026, the program allows states to purchase drugs at CMS-negotiated prices. Participating states receive uniform coverage criteria and lower costs.
CMS will release applications for manufacturers this fall. The initiative follows President Trump's May executive order on drug pricing. Administrator Mehmet Oz leads the effort under Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
Typhoon Reveals Shipwreck
Typhoon Kalmaegi exposed a centuries-old shipwreck on Vietnam's coast last week. The 57-foot vessel, discovered in 2023 off Hoi An, dates between the 14th and 16th centuries when the area was a major trade hub.
The ship's wood-ribbed hull survived hundreds of years nearly intact. Experts found it was built from durable timber and reinforced with waterproofing materials, suggesting it was designed for long-distance maritime trade or naval operations.
Authorities are preparing an emergency excavation permit application. Officials warn the wreck faces serious deterioration without immediate conservation. Typhoon Kalmaegi killed 188 people in the Philippines and five in Vietnam.

One Question Makes Interviewers Your Advocate
Most candidates fumble the final question in a job interview — "Do you have any questions?" — with silence or generic queries they already know the answer to.
Ask this instead:
"Let's say this interview went really well and a year from now, I have the job. Looking back, what would I have had to have done in order for you to feel like hiring me was a good decision?"
Why it works: The interviewer must mentally place you in the role, reveal actual performance expectations, and become psychologically invested in your success. Bosses hire candidates they can visualize succeeding.
