Lilly Buys Psychedelics
Eli Lilly announced yesterday it will acquire psychedelic drugmaker AtaiBeckley for $2.8 billion, with another $1 billion on the table if the startup's experimental mental health drugs hit key milestones.
The prize is BPL-003, a DMT-based nasal spray for treatment-resistant depression that earned FDA Breakthrough Therapy status last fall. The pipeline also includes a social anxiety pill built on a molecular structure found in MDMA (Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy for PTSD).
It's a full-circle move: Lilly's last mental health blockbuster was Prozac, roughly 40 years ago. With the FDA fast-tracking psychedelic research this year and AtaiBeckley shares already doubled, Lilly plans up to $25 billion in acquisitions in 2026.
Taco Bell Bug
The CDC has officially linked a cyclospora outbreak to shredded iceberg lettuce supplied to Taco Bell, warning customers last night not to eat it at locations in Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, and West Virginia.
More than 1,644 people reported eating at Taco Bell before falling ill, with 94 hospitalized. Federal officials traced the lettuce to Taylor Farms, a $7 billion supplier, and to a single grower in Mexico. What is cyclospora?
The bigger picture: 2026 is on pace to be the worst cyclospora year on record, with 1,645 confirmed cases across 34 states and 5,100 more under investigation. Grocery store salads may be implicated next. Foods safe to eat / foods to avoid.
Dangerous AI Backlash
Threats against AI executives are surging. Digital threats on AI chiefs and data centers grew sevenfold from late February to May, and a Texas man was charged with attempted murder for allegedly firebombing Sam Altman's home (photo).
The backlash tracks public sentiment. A March Quinnipiac survey found Americans worried about AI outnumber the unworried four to one, with 55% saying the technology does more harm than good, largely over jobs and affordability.
Companies are paying up for protection. In 2025, 38% of S&P 500 tech firms disclosed executive security spending, up from 27% in 2021. Palantir's bill jumped 150% to nearly $3 million, and Oracle's hit $5.6 million.
