Jury selection began Monday in Las Vegas for Duane Davis, 63, accused of orchestrating Tupac Shakur's 1996 killing. The trial is expected to last about a month, nearly 30 years after the shooting.

Shakur was shot in a BMW near the Strip with Suge Knight driving. He died six days later at 25. The case went cold until Davis published a tell-all memoir in 2019 (the book).

Prosecutors are not claiming Davis fired the shots and plan to call up to 45 witnesses. The three other men in the Cadillac that night have all since died, meaning the trial likely won't reveal who pulled the trigger.

President Trump signed an executive order Monday calling for fewer routine childhood vaccines. The order would cut the list of universally recommended shots to 11 and split the MMR vaccine into three separate doses.

Trump linked vaccines to rising autism rates during the signing. Decades of research have found no such connection. The order also directs the Justice Department to investigate states over vaccine exemption rules (the autism argument).

A federal judge blocked similar changes in January. Legal challenges are expected again. Insurance coverage stays unchanged, though splitting MMR means more office visits, and the US is logging its worst measles year in decades. Some doctors are pushing back.

The Lower 48 just recorded its hottest month in 132 years of record-keeping. July averaged 76.9 degrees, edging out the Dust Bowl's July 1936, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said Monday.

That shows up on the bill arriving now. Households are projected to spend about $792 on electricity this summer, up 10.5% from last year and nearly 40% since 2020. Utility debt nationwide is nearing $25 billion.

The driver was nighttime lows, which broke the old record by 0.7 degrees, meaning air conditioners never got their overnight break. Forecasters expect above-average heat through August. Alaska was the lone exception, its coolest July since 2008.
